Freedom Leads to Prosperity

Statue of Liberty"THE FREE MARKET has provided more wealth and spurred more innovation than any other system in history," wrote Mike Brownfield, editor of The Heritage Foundation's email newsletter, Morning Bell, today. That astute observation echoes the profound words of William McGurn, vice president of News Corporation, in a March 3, 2011, speech delivered at Hillsdale College. Said McGurn: "The Almighty who created us in His image also bequeathed to us a world where we are most prosperous when we are most free."

Not that freedom will guarantee prosperity. It is a sad paradox that freedom does not even guarantee continued freedom. After all, freedom is about choices, and choices have consequences. Free people -- individuals and nations alike -- can make unwise choices that lead to a loss of freedom. Similarly, free people -- families and civilizations alike -- can make foolish financial decisions that lead to crushing debt, bankruptcy, poverty, and squalor.

But freedom allows people also to make choices that will enable them to prosper, individually and as a community, in a way that could never be achieved under a managed economy or under a climate of excessive government regulation that takes business decisions out of the hands of business owners and deprives consumers of the power to choose. Free people who make wise and responsible choices will remain free. They will also thrive economically, because a free market will reward entrepreneurs and innovators who are responsive to peoples' needs and desires. That is why, as Mr. Brownfield wrote, "the free market has provided more wealth and spurred more innovation than any other system in history."
