It's Never Just  "the Economy, Stupid"

President, The Claremont Institute

WE ARE OFTEN told that we possess the most powerful military in the world and that we will face no serious threat for some time to come. We are comforted with three reassurances aimed at deflecting any serious discussion of national security: (1) that Islam is a religion of peace; (2) that we will never go to war with China because our economic interests are intertwined; and (3) that America won the Cold War and Russia is no longer our enemy. But these reassurances are myths, propagated on the right and left alike. We believe them at our peril, because serious threats are already upon us.

Are We Safer Today?
An uncommon perspective on a Commonly Asked Question

ALMOST every day since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan nearly five years ago, some politician or someone in the press – most frequently a critic of the Bush administration – has asked the question: Are we safer today than we were before 9/11? Actually, “Are we safer today?” is not the right question to ask, even though it may seem to be the obvious one. A more important question is: How safe will we be tomorrow? And the answer to that really critical question is yet to be determined. It will depend upon what we do about the dangers we face.
